Chronic Disease Prevention
Helpful Tips For Preventing Chronic Disease
Avoid Smoking
Tobacco smoke contains harmful chemicals linked to conditions such as lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and chronic respiratory illnesses like COPD. Secondhand smoke exposure also poses risks.
Balanced Diet
Focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting processed foods, sugary snacks, and excessive sodium. This balanced approach helps regulate weight, supports heart health, and reduces the risk of conditions like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension
Stay Active
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week, along with muscle-strengthening exercises on two or more days a week.
Limit Alcohol
Excessive alcohol intake is associated with numerous health risks, including liver disease, cardiovascular problems, certain cancers, and mental health disorders. For most adults, limiting alcohol intake to no more than one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men can decrease risk.
Why Surveillance Systems Matter
We utilize surveillance systems to gather health information, which we then report back to the board of health. This data helps in preventing disease by providing insights into the current health status of the population, identifying potential risk factors, and guiding the development of targeted interventions and policies aimed at reducing the burden of disease.
