Board of Health
The mission of the Closter Health Department is to improve and protect the health and well-being of the people in our culturally diverse community by promoting and encouraging healthy behavior and safe practices designed to prevent disease and injury.
The board is charged with advising the mayor and council on matters involving the public health, ensuring that regulations in this area receive the appropriate enforcement, and drafting legislation as needed on public health related issues. The board monitors the actions of the health officer, including the inspection and enforcement of regulations concerning retail food services, occupational health, environmental contamination, animal related health issues, and pest control. The board also oversees such activities as the health fair, animal licensing and vaccination.

What are Retail Food Establishment Sanitation codes?
Restaurants, caterers, food stalls, food trucks, and online retail food businesses are regulated and licensed by Mid-Bergen Regional Health Commission. As a Retail Food Establishment owner, it is your responsibility to understand and comply with N.J.A.C. 8:24 “Sanitation in Retail Food Establishments and Food and Beverage Vending Machines.” Explore N.J.A.C 8:24 below:
Submit a plan for a new retail food establishment
Make sure your inspections are in order as you prepare to open your new establishment. Per N.J.A.C. 8:24 – 9.1(c), The health authority shall review these plans and respond accordingly within 30 days of the date of submission.
